Youth Icons Ghana believes in the power of sport as a major tool for development. In 2011, we entered into a working partnership with Coaches across Continents, a globally active organization based in the United States and the United Kingdom. The three- year partnership agreement under the hat-trick initiative was to provide training for trainers. The program which uses the sport of football to teach life skills to physical education instructors and coaches of juvenile football teams was to engage three hundred trainees by the end of the partnership in 2013.
The program provided training for one hundred physical education instructors and coaches within the first year of the agreement. These were physical education instructors and coaches selected from the northern region of Ghana. The training was held in Tamale, the northern regional capital. Trainees are taking through lessons like football for financial literacy, sport for female empowerment, football for health and the teaching of positive values like respect, tolerance, team work, fair play among others. All trainees were certified at the end of the one week program.
Year two of the program saw another one hundred trainees selected from the Greater Accra region of Ghana participating in the hat-trick initiative. The partnership has been extremely beneficial to participants who have expressed gratitude for the acquisition of knowledge on how to use sport to teach life skills. The partnership although was signed for three years was by the second year self sufficient and sustainable because those certified could provide training to others.
The working partnership with Coaches across Continents was the first in West Africa which later saw Liberia benefitting from the expertise of Coaches across Continents. We are in the process of organizing a grand sporting event in the Volta region of Ghana on April 6 next year between two divided communities who are on the path of reconciliation in recognition of the International Day for the celebration of Sport as a tool for Peace and development. We endorse sport as a critical tool for soft diplomacy and development and for that matter would remain a major platform for interaction as far as Youth Icons is concerned.
